No Experience? 5 Tips On How To Get Started On An Oil Rig Anyway
5 Tips How To Get An Oil Rig Job
Everywhere you look there is something about the booming oil industry. But even though there are supposed to be lots of jobs, how do you go about getting one?
Roustabout job vacancies often don’t get posted anywhere or the agencies that deal with these expect payment before you even apply. And, when you don’t have two cents to rub together paying for something that unsure is climbing too far out on a limb. So how do you go about looking for and finding oil rig roustabout jobs?
1. Do some research on the Internet, use search terms like “jobs on oil rigs no experience”. Right away, you’ll find sites that have job listings. One of the best job sites that gives a lot of information is Oil Rig Jobs Guide
2. Click on some of the jobs advertised and see what the requirements are. You need to find out about things like skills certification, survival and safety courses and even vaccinations for the places you want to work. Every country has their own rules and how they deal with the maritime laws that cover offshore oil rigs.
3. Then get busy – do the courses, get the certifications and vaccinations, prepare yourself to be hired. Every time you apply for entry level roustabout jobs, you’ll be the one to stand out because you already have what it takes and don’t have to depend on that tired old statement – “I’m willing to work hard and do anything just to get an oil rig job”. You may not have experience but you have the next best thing – initiative!
4. Ok, you know the work is going to be hard and dirty but you’re young, physically fit and strong, willing and ready to work. Now what? Getting roustabout jobs offshore could start with getting an entry level roustabout job onshore. Because the oil industry is expanding on land as well as offshore, getting one of the land-based roustabout oil job will give you the opportunity to learn the ropes, then work your way up and out to sea. Land-based jobs often don’t pay quite as much because they aren’t as hazardous as offshore ones but the roustabout job is the same on-shore as off-shore – general laborer. So if getting roustabout jobs offshore is more difficult, try a different route, gain the experience and in the process, make yourself more attractive for when you are ready to move up.
Once you’ve got one of the many oil rig roustabout jobs going, learn everything you can. Even though most of it will be manual work, you might get an opportunity to learn about, and get involved with, the more specialized jobs like drillers and derrickmen. You might get the chance to supervise projects involving other roustabouts. Then when promotions come up, you could be the one in the right place at the right time with the right capabilities, ambition and attitude to move up to roughneck and the offshore oil rigs.
5. You can start out getting an entry level oil rig job with no experience, but if the experts are correct in their predictions of the current oil boom lasting for the next 20 years, working toward getting a diploma or certificate in a useful, technical trade such a plumber, electrician or mechanic could start your career in the oil industry at an entirely different level.
Other starting points for someone without experience on an offshore rig is joining the crew as a cook or paramedic. Men on oil rigs work hard so they need good food regularly and although oil companies work hard to keep people safe, accidents still happen so there will always be a need for the paramedics.
So, with some research, some planning, some preparation, having no experience
doesn’t need to hold you back from getting into the career you want.
