It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown

As a kid, I did not really watch that much TV (unless it was baseball). There was, however, one show that I really looked for to watching each Halloween season; It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.

Every year, since 1966, this sensational animated cartoon has aired on one of the national television stations to the delight of millions of kids across America. Set in late October, this show follows the adventures of Charlie Brown and his gang as they prepare for their annual trick-or-treat adventures.

While there are a number of truly funny parts in this cartoon, my favorite has to be when Charlie Brown and his gang are out trick-or-treating around their neighborhood.

Imagine, if you will, a group of kids gathered around in a circle excitedly telling their friends what type of candy the last house gave them. It seems as if everyone has hit the sugar jackpot; except for Charlie Brown that is.

For whatever reason, the only thing he got was a bunch of rocks. House after house…’I got a rock’.

Of course, this absolutely cracks my son and I up every time we hear it. Despite not knowing for sure why his neighbors would give him a rock instead of candy, our guess is that his Charlie Brown costume did him no favors.

It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown

Linus is one of those guys that you cannot help but root for. Each and every year his one ambition is to see The Great Pumpkin in person. Of course, since Halloween is the only time of year where this is possible this is when Linus turns his full attention towards this endeavor.

Against the recommendations of his friends, Linus writes a letter to this mystical being each year with the hope that he will finally make his long-waited appearance. Additionally, he spends each Halloween in a pumpkin patch in lieu of trick-or-treating with his friends.

This animated series is, by far, my favorite of all the Charlie Brown specials. If you are a fan of The Peanuts, or great comic strips in general, you owe it to yourself (and your kids) to check it out.
