This is a yummy BBQ baked bean recipe you can make from scratch at home. This BBQ baked bean recipe is a family tradition at the family picnic every summer. Finding a good BBQ Baked Bean Recipe can be difficult, but what I like about this BBQ Baked Bean recipe is that you can do it the long way, or the shorter way. Soaking beans overnight may not be an option for you, so this BBQ Baked Bean recipe allows you to submitted and makes adjustments based on the types of beans you use.
Ingredients ( SERVES 10-12 )
- 4 cups dry pinto beans (substitute parts for other beans, navy beans are always good)
- 4 slices slab bacon
- 1/2 Lb country ground sausage (turkey sausage has less fat)
- 28 oz crushed tomatoes
- 12 oz tomato paste
- 1/4 cup fresh chopped Italian parsley
- 1 cup chopped onion (vidalia)
- 1/4 cup minced garlic
- 1/2 cup light brown sugar (more or less to taste)
- 1/2 cup dark molasses (more or less to taste)
- 1/4 cup liquid smoke (add more or less to own taste, 1/4 cup moderate smoky flavor).
- 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tbsp black pepper
- 1/2 tbsp kosher salt
- 1/4 tsp red pepper powder
- 1/4 cup Italian seasoning
- 1/4 cup garlic powder
- 1/4 cup onion powder
- 1 cup Marsala or white cooking wine
- 1 stick or 1/4 Lbs. of butter or margarine, but the margarine does bring it a different taste
Directions:
Soak the dried beans in a pot over night 12-20 hours (do not salt your beans and water) – you can substitute for canned beans if you are in a hurry.
Rinse the beans.
Boil beans for 1 HOUR if using pre-soaked beans. Boil beans for 2 HOURS if using canned beans; it is important to check the beans and make sure they are soft enough to eat, if not, boil longer until desired tenderness is reached. (do not salt the beans or water).
Add the crushed tomatoes and tomato paste into a medium sauce pan. Stir in remaining ingredients (except the bacon and beans). Cover, bring to a boil, and then turn the heat down low. Simmer low for about 20-30 minutes stirring frequently and breaking up the pieces of sausage into small pieces.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees
Drain and rinse the boiled beans. Put beans into the 16 x 9 inch baking dish. Ladle and stir sauce sauce into beans, make sure they are well covered, baked bean oven mess is not pretty and the smell sticks.
Lay the bacon strips on top and bake for 1 HOUR or until the sauce is slightly caramelized on top.
Let cool for 5 minutes and serve.
